Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Chiang Mai Thailand

One of the main reason we headed to Chiang Mai was to visit the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary.  This was by far, ended up being one of my favorite days of the trip!  The day started off by getting picked up from our hostel (Dwell hostel), along with other people in hotels/hostels near ours.  It was a bit chilly that morning (in the 50s), but after about an hour drive we finally made it! After an intro speech and instructions we were ready to go! They also explained to us why riding on elephants is so bad (please please don’t go to a place where they ride elephants!).  After that, we were given sugar cane, and then were able to go feed the elephants! They really loved the sugar cane they even tried to take some out of my pocket.

We then continued to go get the bundles of branches for them to eat and feed them even more.  I was surprised, the elephants were so kind and gentle. After feeding the elephants we took a quick break for lunch which was provided for us.

We then start making their “medicine” as they called it.  Which was just creating balls of mashed banana with rice and other various natural ingredients they need to stay healthy that they couldn’t find in the area otherwise.

It was such an incredible experience and I’m so glad we went!  Although the elephant jungle sanctuary was a bit “pricier” comparatively to the rest of Thailand, elephants are very expensive to take care of.  I’d say it was well worth it, with a once in a lifetime type of experience! Check out the video below to see how awesome and kind the elephants are!
