Benefits of Lifting Weights

When I was competing in cross country/track in college I became very injury prone.  I am not talking about a little sprain or strained muscle, I am talking stress fractures upon stress fractures.  I have had 3 stress fractures while in college, some worse than others, taking longer to heal.  I had only had very minor injuries in high school, and I got to thinking why had I never got injured in high school but all of a sudden my bones would crumble.  So, I analyzed my training logs to see the difference.

So what was the difference?
I lifted weights in high school.  Could that have been the contributing factor? So I did my Internet research as per usual when something doesn’t feel right.  What did I found surprised me.  Lifting weights helps strengthens bones?  Who would have thought that (I had later learned that in my exercise science courses, so eventually I would have figured that out)?

I feel as though most people only think of lifting weights as gaining muscle and getting stronger.  So I am here to share some of the other benefits of lifting weights!

1. Increase bone density
2. Strengthen muscles
3. Increase flexibility
4. The more muscle you have the greater your metabolic rate!
5. Reduce health risks

And remember just because you lift weights does not mean you will get that “bulky” muscle!
Try incorporating lifting into your weekly routine and aim for 2-3 sessions per week!Have a great weekend everyone!

I used to lift weights and got really discouraged by jerkoffs at the gym. I’d often have guys come up to me and “remind” me that I should be over on the treadmill. Not in “their” section. Or, they’d come up to me and tell me that I was lifting wrong even when I know I wasn’t.

I need to get back into it though because you’re right about the benefits!

It makes me so sad to hear that some guys say things like that! Women are just as strong and athletic as guys! Don’t let them discourage you. You can accomplish and do anything you put your mind to 🙂
